What is a dad bod, and how do you actually get rid of one?
The dad bod gets a lot of jokes. But if you're the guy carrying one, it's not that funny. Here's what it actually is and how dads really get rid of it.
What is a dad bod?
A dad bod is the body of a guy who is busy with everything except himself. You used to train, or you meant to. Then kids, work and the mortgage showed up. Some muscle is still there underneath, but so is the softness around the middle.
It's not laziness. It's what happens when your best hours go everywhere else. Here's the part the memes miss: a dad bod is not a body type, it's a body on hold. The guy underneath didn't go anywhere.
What does a dad bod actually look like?
It's different for every dad, but it usually looks like this:
- A gut that wasn't there at 28
- Shoulders that used to fill out a shirt
- Low energy by 2pm, tired but wired at night
- A back and knees that talk to you after playing on the floor
- A bathroom mirror you've stopped really looking into
Why it shows up in your 30s and 40s
Nobody wakes up one day with a dad bod. It's a stack of small things. Sleep debt from years of early wakeups. Stress that never turns off. A beer or two most nights to take the edge off. Skipping lunch, then eating whatever is in the kitchen at 9pm. And training is always the first thing off the calendar when a kid gets sick or work runs late.
Your body didn't betray you. Your routine died and nobody replaced it.
How to get rid of a dad bod for real
You can't out-train a shitty week, and you can't starve your way to being a good dad. Here's what actually works:
- Three honest training sessions a week beat five skipped ones
- Eat protein first at every meal, then build the rest around it
- Track what you eat and drink for real, not from memory
- Fix your sleep before you touch anything else
- Make it survive your actual life, because life is not going to get quieter
The part no app tells you
Every dad already knows what to do. Knowing isn't the problem. The problem is the Tuesday when work runs late, the kid has a fever, and the plan quietly dies for the fourth time this year.
That's the gap I fill. I've been in the hole myself: walked out of the fire service fat, weak and worn out. Now I run the whole rebuild for other dads. Bloodwork first if you want it, a plan built around your real schedule, and me holding you to it week after week.
